The Healthy Trail is a website dedicated to providing information related to camping, overlanding, and traveling in the continental US. The website is administered by two individuals (husband and wife) who have no commercial interest at this time. We utilize Matomo, an open source web analytics platform. A web analytics platform is used by a website owner in order to measure, collect, analyse and report visitors data for purposes of understanding and optimizing their website.

2. Purpose of data processing

The processing of personal data with Matomo is based on legitimate interests of The Healthy Trail. We collect data in order to analyze the behavior of visitors to our website. The intent is to identify issues such as missing pages, search engine indexing issues, which articles are the most interesting to visitors, etc. To achieve this, we collect the following:

  • Anonymized IP address (we strip off several digits)
  • Approximate location (best guess at city, state, region, and country - not street address)
  • Title of the page being viewed
  • URL of the page being viewed, and the URL of the previous page
  • Date and time
  • Screen resolution
  • Time to generate the page
  • Operating system (e.g. Windows or Mac)
  • Browser (e.g. Chrome or Safari)
3. Our Legitimate Interests

Processing your personal data helps us identify what is working and what is not on our website. For example, it helps us identify if the way we are communicating is engaging or not, and how we can organize the structure of the website better. Our team is benefiting from the processing of your personal data, and they are directly acting on the website. By processing your personal data, you can enjoy a website which is constantly improving. Your data will be used only to improve the user experience on our website and help you find the information you are looking for.

4. Recipient of the personal data

Kayla and Luis Elortondo are the only recipients of your data. The data is stored in a secure server run out of our home, and is inaccessible to any other parties, such as Google Analytics or others.

5. Details of transfers to other countries

Matomo data is hosted in the United States and not transferred to any other country.

6. Retention Period

We retain data for 12 months. This allows us to assess how effective our improvements are over time. Data is automatically deleted after 12 months.

7. The existence of each of the data subject’s rights

As Matomo is processing personal data on legitimate interests, you can exercise the following rights:

  • Right of access: you can ask us at any time to access your personal data.
  • Right to erasure: you can ask us at any time to delete all the personal data we are processing about you.
  • Right to object: you can object to the tracking of your personal data by using the following opt-out feature.
Please choose from the following options to determine whether or not we track your anonymized activity on our website. Your selection will be stored in your browser's local storage so that you do not have to reset this option at a subsequent visit.

If you wish us to not process any personal data with Matomo, you can opt-out from it at any time. There will be no consequences at all regarding the use of our website.
